Stems

Film sound is made up of hundreds of different parts but comes down to 4 distinct categories.

These are the fundamental building stones of a film sound mix arrangement.

  1. Dialogue
  2. Music
  3. Atmos
  4. Sound FX

2.5 RULE: 2.5 OUT OF 4 SOUND STEMS AT ANY GIVEN TIME

Foley:

  • Invented by Jack Foley
  • Def: the process of recording character sounds for film sound track
  • Foley usually makes up more than half of the Sound FX Stem

Foley Personnel

  • Foley Recordist/Editor = record the Foley, Cue sheets (spotting notes)
  • Foley Artists aka Foley Walkers = perform the sounds seen on screen – 1-3 artists at a time

Foley Elements

  1. Moves (movements sounds, clothing)
  2. Walking (Footsteps)
  3. Specifics (misc. sounds, doors, coffee cups, keyboards & mouse clicking)

Foley Studios

  • Foley Stages ( multiple surfaces to create walking sounds ) ie. Grass, Concrete, Gravel, Sand, Wood etc.
  • Stuff & Junk, (Doorways, Cups, Shoes, Tables, Cutlery)
  • Screen in live Room
